Presenting Dubfest 2007

It might have been my third or fourth year in a row helping out with the event–my memory serves me quite poorly. Then again, so has my mainstay in the Southern California VW-Audi scene. I dropped out of it no less than three years ago. But I do my part in staying true to my “automobile roots” by committing to helping out with Dubfest every year. Plus, I’m happy to do my small part and come through for Tom, who is one of the coolest and sweetest guys you’ll ever meet in the SoCal Dub scene.

I had the minor mods, but now she’s almost bone stock. She’s just really loud, and no less fun to drive than when I first got her. The (2nd set of) bushings have softened up and my suspension could be replaced. It may be a long time coming already but I’m determined to cross that bridge when I come to it. For now, she’s doing a great job handling the hustle, bustle and poor road construction of mid-town L.A. traffic.

So here I was, at Irwindale Speedway once again. Last year, Volkswagen of America (VWoA) had brought a few MkV (latest generation) GTIs so people test them out. That meant attendees at Dubfest last year could drive a car that hadn’t even been released. For the Automobile OEM to come rekonize at a mostly aftermarket showcase is not too shabby–as it’s been argued this is the largest VW-Audi-Porsche show in the country. This year, it would be strictly a car show and auto-cross.

So I checked the cone racer (auto-cross) dudes in at the door. It was fun. Some familiar names and faces amongst a sea of the unfamiliar, but it was almost the same-ol’-scene. When my job was done, I walked around and took some pics even though they were still staging the MKIV class, which were still lined up.

Enjoy the slide show. Camera picture quality in spite of my inexperience appears courtesy of Stefan:

In addition to the car show, it was great having such a productive weekend. In all, I attended The Los Angeles Greek Festival, practiced yoga, attended (and brought dessert to) church, enjoyed take-out Hawaiian food, enjoyed ramen (twice), did laundry, and had a ball looking at Tim’s baby pictures. I’m determined to enjoy Asian food this week, as there will be quite a shortage over the course of a couple weeks very soon!

I hope everyone is having a great start to the week. I’m so anxious for my trip–leaving in four days!

Love,
*e

@ericj: Ooh, waterfest. I’ve heard great things about that show … mostly the history, of course. How cool you have a mkii swap. I’m thinking of a mkv gli myself. For later. ;)

I pledge allegiance (currently) to Honda, but them V-dubs (and Audis, and Porsche’s) look ILL. Makes me want to take a test drive!

two large meets in the same weekend… the S2k Homecoming @ Honda Americas netted 400+ S2ks in one spot. The drive up from Irvine was just as outrageous… color coordinated and all.

I, being the non-meet-friendly personality that I am now, judged a brief Drift Day (amateur) Competition @ El Toro then passed out at home. Blah. I miss the good ol’ days of 240 meets.

I’ve been trying to buy a new car for a little over two years now. I’ve never been a big VW person, but I admit riding in yours for just a sec made me look into the German market.

And thanks for the RSS recommendation, even though it wasn’t necessarily directed at me. I haven’t slept since I created mine. It has made my life more efficient, but now I just desire more all the time.

@Capell: Aye, if we could combine Honda’s reliability with…oh I’m about to be blasphemous here so I’ll stop. ;)

@Alex Chang: Sounds like a fantastic collectino of s2k’s. I would have loved to see the sights, but you know after an hour I’m about done. And leaving car meets after an hour is usually kind of rude, because you’re supposed to be there for the people. I still remember the 240 meets you put together @ Nissan.

@Methodick: All I gotta say is if you’re into torque then that’s why you go German. Har. I’m glad you found usage in personalizing your RSS reader! It’s kind of like a food court with all your favorite stands. And an endless appetite, of course. With your weight drawing a parallel with your RSS feed reading time or something. K, the analogy stops there. ;)

I CRAVED Asian food when I was in Europe for 6 weeks one summer. Even white rice and some soy sauce would have been nice. I was getting pretty sick of bread, cold cuts, and cheese. And I’m not even a rice-fan. I came home and had a bowl of miso soup. Enjoy your vacation–we plan on going there next July.

i kinda like the new VW convertible….but is it a chick car?

  9. Posted September 11, 2007 at 10:22 pm | Permalink

@twolims: Indeed! My rationale too is that it’s so cheap and it would be dumb to go grocery shopping because I’m going to be out of town … so it’s kind of a perfect excuse to go out and eat stuff like noodles. ;)

@big league: Yeah, I think it’s as much of a chick car as the Jetta. :D But still looks so fun!

I think in London at least you’ll find a lot of international cuisine. If you’re like most So Calers, I guess you don’t consider Indians Asian, but the Indian food there is damn good. As is the Greek food. Damn it, there’s an LA Greek Fest? I totally would have wanted to go. Next year, I suppose…
