@Gnorb: Exactly!! Yeah there is a definite emphasis on the end times being the focus and the reason for apathy - when in fact we're supposed to "love all others" and whatever else that entails.

Amen!

What gets me is, as you pointed out, that these people aren't asking to grow or change, but rather to be able to continue a destructive behavior. Of course, many of these people believe that the end of the world is near, that therefore we don't really have a responsibility to future generations, and that it's not like we're really having any sort of effect on the planet (environmentalism aside, what about the human cost factor), so that point is completely lost on them.

The first thing this post made me think of was that old SNL skit where Phil Hartman as Jesus visits Sally Field and tells her that she doesn't need to pray quite as much has she has been. One of my favs. Can't find a youtube video of it though.

@Brian: The number of versions out there makes my head spin. :) It is a good verse and everything surrounding it in Scripture is something, I think, goes completely overlooked in too many circles of Christian faith. Okay, maybe the ones I've gotten accustomed to being in. ;)

I have to say, that is perhaps my favorite Bible verse (though I like the older versions in terms of linguistics), and it pretty much sums up my stance on prayer and, more generally, good deeds and charity.
