@Ollie: Thank you for the praises. I think you can never be sure of how a blog will turn out even a year later, so now that I’ve gotten more of a feel of it (not to say it won’t change – who knows?) I’ve had time to figure out what it’s meant to me, not meant to me – the freedoms I’ve been allowed to have because of it and also what barriers have to go up to protect the very way I enjoy running it.

@pelf: Indeedy – I feel ya. I think it’s a bit of, “This is how I want you to perceive me. You’ll get the big picture of me if you go to this website here…” Also, what if they don’t want to know (yet)? If they’re actually curious and I happen to find out they’re curious, it’s a different story.

@Edrei: I might contest your definition of “common sense.” But I know what you mean – treat others how you’d like to be treated if not better. You have a point about speaking of a culture there is w/us. Geeks.

The thing about blogging is that there are no rules to blogging. There is only common sense and…well…common sense really. It’s just that after so long, a lot of us, especially those that have been blogging for a while are buried under the culture that has become the blogging we know.

Before this, all you could get away with was common sense and decent manners, because that’s what it boils down to. Do and use exactly what you need to and keep the social etiquette.

The rest follows naturally.

I’m with you in #1.

I don’t get it when people I’m meeting and talking to ask me to check out their blogs. I have never asked anybody to check out my blog. In fact, I am not comfortable whenever somebody tells me that they’ve “found” my blog.

Not that I write dirty stuff on my blog, but having a group of people discussing the things that they have just read from my blog is akin to watching them washing my underwear in public.

I get the impression this is an important post to you, and I praise you for writing it. You say at the top that it may not apply to subject-specific blogs, but I can tell you that generally-speaking and in my most humblest of opinions/experiences, what you’ve written here does. Especially your second rule; substitute the the camera for writing, and you’ve nailed niche-blogging.
