What's with the anti-valet propaganda? Kidding, of course. I don't even valet my car.

There are so many reasons why manual is superior. We should have some kind of union. With benefits.

@uncannyman: Sure thing; it's good to have a life off the internet. :) Thanks for the compliments. I bought the car in LA, didn't drive it from WI. I haven't lived in WI for quite a few years!

I can agree that it's more "comfortable" driving automatic indeed. I guess comfort isn't my top priority and I'm willing to sacrifice that for driveability. Thing is, I'm completely used to the clutch so I don't really notice it anymore.

Thanks again for stopping by. :)

hey estar! thanks for dropping by my site the other day! Sorry I haven't been able to drop by yours lately. Been quite tied up with work *bleh!*

Anyway nice looking mini you have there, and you drove it all the way from Wisconsin to LA?? Woah! must have been one hellova ride for ya ;)

Oh you drive stick as well??? NICE!!! I don't get it why people make it such a big deal to drive stick, that's the ONLY way we're taught when we take our driving license examination over here.

It's quite interesting though, cuz in big large cities like mine (KL,Malaysia), almost 75-80% of the cars are automatic! I've asked a couple of them about it and they said it's far more comfortable driving automatic than manual. And yeah sometimes I know what they mean when I get stuck in traffic myself for hours and having to press the clutch again and release it again and keep doing it for like 20-30 times in a span of 5-10 minutes...your legs start giving way!

nice post, really enjoyed reading it :)

@codemunky: That was a crazy parallel you just drew. I've actually had a valet grind my clutch in front of me before I even went inside the restaurant. But then again, what do I expect? Have a gf who's a valet; I've heard the stories from the "inside" too. You heard me correctly; there's an underground society of valets.

One time on Highland, this guy in some fixed up car was tailgating me. It was annoying and it was dangerous. There are 2 lanes there so I slowed down in my lane so he would pass me up. He didn't, and I got so angry I basically pointed him to the other lane time after time. He still wouldn't budge, and just put up his hands, mouthing "go faster." Well what if I didn't want to? I mean it's one thing to drive like a douche but it's on a whole other level to be stubborn about it. Ugh. I had to outrun him.

A few random rules and observations of mine.

-Let's face it, half the people on the road are douchebags who become orgasmic when they're first at a stoplight. Drive lightly, so that in their minds, they moan like they're in a bad porn flick.

-Valets stall my grocery getter every single time.

-Californians can't turn. But in Utah, they can.

-Keep a portable air horn. It's louder than your car's. And it's more fun!

-Keep barf bags on each side. You'll thank me for it. I'm not kidding.

@roxan: It's true! I'm a strong believer in driving karma, as in trying to be mindful to let people in rather than scoot along and pretend you don't see them there. ;)

@albolin: You skipped the middle-aged crisis. What happened to your roadster?

I have a funny story about just having learned stick back in the day and stalling as the first in line in the left turn green arrow lane at the Wilshire/Santa Monica intersection in BH. Embarrassing. ;)

I used to drive stick. Then I got old and now I drive an automatic. Next thing you know, I'll be a little older and you'll see me riding a Harley.

One thing that annoys me is the person in the left turn arrow lane that goes too slow, causing me to miss the light. argh!
