That's amazing, Tim. :) A unique perspective and environment...I'd love to be a fly on the wall for a day.

my eldest son is now attending kindergarten at our local Baltimore city neighborhood public school where there are maybe 4 or 5 other asians in his entire school of 185. the difference between our white washed experience and his is that the school is maybe 80% latino 10% black and the rest are white. It will be interesting how skewed his world view will be... though right now, most of the latino kids expect him to speak Spanish...

tracy: "Because they're bitches and hoes"

She has a straightforward way of looking at things.

@moet-chan: Indeed, as is the case with insecurities in this world. You speak the truth. As for going to a live venue and putting up with parking, putting up money, that music better be worth my trip out there. I am happy to get the groove on in my seat or space as long as the music carries me there... So for me, live music > clubs. But I know that's just a personal preference.

Thank you for that quote, I'm adding it in to my Book of Quotes. Also, I feel that if someone's mad-dogging you they are just hatin' out of jealousy if they feel you have something (like independence or carefree bounce) they don't, or because you're different, like mean chicks would in high school. Hollywood is just a microcosm or middle/high school. I've been reading this Gossip-Girl-esque YA series, and the author says she draws upon the years she worked at MTV. Adolescents tend to be self-conscious about appearances, and Hollywood is all about appearances, ergo Hollywood is populated with adolescents. I can't speak for them though, girls who mad-dog. I can't remember ever initiating somthing like that. In fact the more i think about it the less I understand it and the more I realize I'm not really sure what I'm talking about.

Apologies if I've posted this link before. Nightclubs are Hell
But, I think he makes valid points because I don't remember many clubs playing good music. And if you don't smile constantly, people point out that you look like you're not having fun.

@rosa: Thanks. ;)

@/a: What an interesting perspective. Grass is always greener, it seems. ;) Then again - as they say - nothing that's worthwhile comes easy...

@Edrei: Indeed, I completely agree. Bias can't be avoided; it's a matter of self-examination and addressing them rather than covering them up as if they never existed.

I can relate to this and I have written about before. Coming from a country where racial prejudice is common, there first we all have to admit in ourselves is that no matter what, we do tend to have racial bias. We shouldn't be shocked that we're all racists whether we're black, white, Chinese, Malaysian, Indian.

We just have to admit to ourselves that we are, so that we can start learning how to move past it. The more we deny and point fingers at others for being racist, the more we're just making a bigger one for ourselves.

I had a rough time living in a white suburb part of L.A. county with the usual round of name-calling, fights, etc. That died away a few years after, but then an influx of Chinese (Taiwanese) FOBs moved in. "You're white-washed", "You have it way too easy here. You don't have to struggle with the English language and culture here!"

Thanks for the blog post, e. Never knew or met anyone else had the same frustration I had until now. :)
