Wilshire Restaurant: No-Nonsense, Bottomless Sunday Brunch For Your Buck

The Wilshire Restaurant (Top Chef star Nyesha Arrington helms the kitchen) has recently launched a pretty spectacular Sunday weekly, and that happens to be a buffet-style brunch that is not to be missed. Since I normally relegate buffets (read: gorge parties) to Vegas, if even that, it’s really easy for me to dismiss these all-you-can eat, self-serve extravaganzas.

However, the Wilshire Restaurant’s Sunday deal has not only the brunch plate essentials, but bottomless Mimosas and Bloody Mary bar – plus a really neat patio ensconced in the cool, Santa Monica air – at the very reasonable price of $35 per person. It runs throughout the daytime for your leisure, so if you are into loitering, you could go from 11 AM until 5 PM if you really wanted to – but that would be pretty tacky.

The 2011 L.A. Easter Brunch Round-Up

I don’t remember ever having given up anything for Lent. But I always have celebrated Easter in non-ritualistic fashion – just as I eat and celebrate life. Every day is a rebirth, right?

Did I mention that I love eggs?

I compiled a bunch of Easter Brunch specials around town. There are plenty of restaurants offering up 3-course prix fixe menus for Sunday morning, but a lot of them have some pretty solid choices.

Go ahead…you can scan this post for the bottomless champagne or mimosa spots. I totally understand.

(By the way, I can’t believe how Westward this list skews… Do Eastsiders not celebrate Easter?) 😉

I know I said “brunch,” and I know Mark Gold calls this the “Eva Dinner Party,” but the noon start time has to count for something, doesn’t it? You get all of the following: Deviled Eggs, Nicoise Salad with Olive Relish and Roast Peppers, Chicken “Pallard” with Arugula and Mustard, Warm Potato Salad, Prime Skirt Steak, Grilled Asparagus and Strawberry Shortcake with Whipped Creme Fraiche. I know. Amazing. This is where I’ll be…sometime during Easter Day.

You get a couple choices for your 3-course prix fixe, all menus of which vary according to location! Be sure to peep the right Chaya outpost for your menu.

A few highlights from what I can see on all three menus include French Toast with Granola Crust, Kabocha Squash Ricotta Cheese Gnocchi, Grilled New York Steak and Fries with Poached Egg, Pancetta-wrapped Gulf Shrimp with Provencal Grits, Meyer Lemon Mascarpone Cheese Tart. I think the Downtown location is where to be!

Not feeling the prix fixe but don’t want any hassle? Obika’s doing it up buffet style – at the mall. Mozzarella di Bufala along with a selection of Smoked Wild Alaskan Salmon, Assorted, Salumi, Caponata with Pan Carsau, Artichoke Ricotta Quiche with Thyme and Mint, Ricotta Mousse and four (yes, four) flavors of Tirimisu will all be available. In addition, your table will get to pick one choice of pasta served family style, including Handmade Ricotta and Spinach Ravioli with Brown Butter and Sage, Lasagnetta with Peas and Tagliolini with Artichoke and Mint.

The 2010 Easter Sunday Brunch & Dinner Round-Up

Where are you eating on Sunday? Hopefully you’re looking for a spot to brunch or dine at, because this particular round-up is one I can’t take advantage of myself since I’ll be in Mammoth. Whether you’re looking for bottomless bubbly, a buffet, a prix fixe menu or simply special dishes offered for the holiday, there are plenty of options all around town. Though I tried finding spots to represent the LA neighborhoods equally, apparently the Christians live on the westside as most of the specials I’ve found skew toward that side of town. It’s a curious thing, especially to an adoptive eastsider like myself.

Santa Monica: Whist at The Viceroy

Spend Easter by the beach. Whist at The Viceroy’s Executive Chef Tony DiSalvo (formerly of NYC’s Jean Georges) will be procuring an Easter feast to extend throughout the day but offered as two separate buffet menus: Brunch and dinner. Expect a shellfish station as well as a leg of lamb/prime rib station whether you do afternoon or night, but omelettes and grits in the first half and a risotto station in the second. The best part? The price includes access to the bellini station and house wine. Not bad for a such a snazzy place like Whist…

From 11 AM – 3 PM, Chaya’s all over Los Angeles will be offering a 3-course prix-fixe Easter Brunch menu. It will cost $35 for adults and $15 for young adults (12 and under), who have their own menu. For the adults, though, bottomless mimosas are included – so I’d highly recommend making a reservation right away to secure your slot. You can do this through Open Table.

At Chaya Venice (full menu), who will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in April 2010, guests can enjoy unique selections such as:

  • Spring Jumbo Crispy Asparagus with Romesco Salsa
  • Roasted Beet Wedge Salad with Bacon, Sun-Dried Tomato, and Blue Cheese Dressing
  • Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict with Asparagus and Roasted Potatoes

The Terrace at Langham Pasadena Chinese New Year Brunch

Arguably the location of the best Chinese food on the West Coast, San Gabriel Valley neighbors Pasadena. Sometimes, though, you’re just in the mood for something a tad more posh, like cushioned wicker chairs with a garden view. Or a cheese plate. Or oysters on the half-shell. Or interesting small plates. Sometimes you’re just in the mood for bottomless bubbly.

Spice Duck with Black Sesame Sauce

Enter the Sunday Chinese New Year Brunch at the Langham Pasadena – available this Sunday and all the remaining Sundays in February. Whether it’s to celebrate the actual new year or Valentine’s Day – or both – it will run you $75 per person including the bottomless bubbly (champagne, mimosa and virgin bloody mary bar) with which to knock back crab claws, cold small Chinese plates (my favorite being the Spice Duck with Black Sesame Sauce), shrimp cocktail leg of lamb and prime rib. There’s also a full-service omelette station with plenty of fillings which to encase with egg.

Hama Hama Oysters on Half-shell

Let’s not forget the decent selection of cheese and charcuterie – something I always have a hard time saying no to. To be honest, there was a little something of everything – even a sushi station. And beautiful music and atmosphere provided by their piano-double-bass duo. First of all, I don’t know that I’ve ever had such good service with the bottomless bubbly. Though the “beverage bar” is accessible at all times, a helpful server was refilling our champagne glasses before we so much as got up even once. Second of all, though a visually pleasing addition to their seafood section, I wouldn’t recommend the crab claws – which weren’t especially fresh and actually stringy and tasteless. No matter – I turned my attention to the oysters on the half-shell. They’re of the Hama Hama variety, with a firm consistency but mild finish…a sensation that feels great going down. I went back for more of these babies while being sure to get a slice of prime rib. Also available in the same corner is leg of lamb.

And oh, how I could wish I could comment on the dim sum offered in the brunch. After all, how is it a Chinese New Year brunch without dim sum? But I was just too zealous with everything else before realizing I should have been prioritizing. Pretty much a novice mistake. Thank goodness Fiona gave the little somethings surprisingly rave reviews.

Be sure to leave room for dessert, as there’s a chocolate fondue fountain, crepe station and extensive pastry section for that sweet tooth. The Chinese New Year’s Brunch is heaven for any glutton. Sit back, enjoy the view, enjoy the bubbles and celebrate Chinese New Year – with Valentine’s Day as an afterthought.
