If you’ve been following the third season of The Taste on ABC, you’re familiar with contestant Vanessa Lauren of Team Bourdain. Eliminated on last week’s semi-finale (ep. 6), Vanessa has somewhat since defected to Team Ludo – in the sense that since taping this season’s episodes, she’s been in Ludo Lefebvre’s kitchens at Trois Mec and now Petit Trois. I sat down with Vanessa Lauren and Chef Ludo the other day in anticipation of The Taste finale, which airs tonight.

Tuesday Comme Ça Burger Nights Start Tomorrow

With the popularity of burgers in this city still going strong, Comme Ça’s David Myers has decided to capitalize on his burger’s longtime reputation as being one of the best burgers in LA (or more specifically, The Best Brasserie Burger in LA). Tomorrow, the Melrose Avenue restaurant will start a Tuesday Burger Night weekly and expand their bun and patty combos beyond the classic.

Check below for your gourmet burger options:

  • Comme Ca Burger – $18
  • Swiss Melt Burger – $18
    Angus beef, gruyere cheese, mushrooms, butter lettuce, crispy onion rings, French fries, garlic aioli
  • Black and Blue Burger – $18
    Angus beef, bleu cheese, red onion, bacon, French fries, garlic aioli
  • Lamb Merguez Burger – $16
    Lamb sausage, roasted peppers and caramelized onions, arugula on ciabatta bun, French fries, harissa aioli
  • Breakfast Burger – $14
    House made pork sausage, egg sunny side up, white gravy, on an English muffin, lyonnaise potato
  • CCVB – $14 (Comme Ca Veggie Burger)
    Cashew & pine nuts, garbanzo bean, ajuwan-tomato jam on a tofu bun, baby kale and spinach salad

Bobcat Bite: The Awesome Green Chile Burger

I admit: I was a tad grumpy as we food bloggers (Mattatouille, Gourmet Pigs, Eating LA, FoodGPS) headed out from Santa Fe on an almost-deserted stretch of freeway that at one time was known as Route 66. Where were we going? Why would a restaurant be all the way out here? It’s hot.

Heat is not exactly great for one’s appetite, and we were on a mission for a burger. But being a team player had never paid off so well. (Thanks for dragging us, FoodGPS. You are the Garmin to my tastebuds.)

It’s not a fluke that the restaurant – always a mom and pop diner – had been open since 1953 and had existed longer than I-25 itself. The name is derived from the fact that the staff used to feed the bobcats that came from the hills at the back of the restaurant. The low ceiling with its wooden planks were evocative of the diner’s longevity, as was the unique charm of the room’s stylings. ordered medium rare

This was an extremely tasty, juicy ground chuck – which is apparently ground daily and is comprised of a decades-old recipe. The bun was no detail, with it perfectly toasted on the outside and having a soft texture in the center.

Who knows if you’ll ever be in New Mexico – but this burger, or its cheeseless, chile-less counterpart (no – not even the green chile burger itself), which is #12 on Alan Richman’s list of “20 Burgers You Must Eat Before You Die” would be well worth the trip if you happen to be anywhere near Santa Fe.
