It was a thankfully mild Sunday in Chinatown, and Grand Central Plaza was filled with red tents under which chefs, cooks, brewers, bartenders and vendors doled out Sriracha-themed exclusives to enthusiasts of the celebrated, local Rooster sauce. Whether the food and drink were evocative of or complementary to the red jalapeno chili sauce, there was no shortage of flavor to be found on that block between Broadway and Hill.

As April and thus, National Grilled Cheese Month, comes to a close, I have come to realize that: 1) This classic sandwich needs no one to vouch for its deliciousness the rest of the year, and 2) Who has time to keep track of the celebratory day or month of every food in existence, anyway? (Oh right: Thank you, PR pitches.)

After all, the sandwich has had its own Invitational here for years on end, to somewhat sadly conclude this year as we food enthusiasts find other foods and combinations of food to fawn over. But let’s not forget that as there have been multiple storefronts dedicated to cupcakes and only cupcakes, for a very long time, dedicated grilled cheese slingers has also become a thing.

Celebrate Grilled Cheese Month With Tillamook, Grilled Cheese Truck, Beverly Hills Porsche and Eva

Every food, every cocktail and probably every action has its own designated month or day – but Grilled Cheese Month is one of the few I’ll willingly celebrate. Hello, Spring!! And, hello, April!!

It starts no later than this Friday, April 1st! Tillamook, the Oregonian (not Wisconsinite) cheesemakers, will be giving out free grilled cheese sandwiches off the Grilled Cheese Truck for an hour at Beverly Hills Porsche (8425 Wilshire Blvd). Don’t miss it, since it’s only from 11 AM – 12 PM. I’d recommend getting there even before 11, since “free” will almost certainly mean a long line!

But wait! There’s more! Next week Tuesday (April 5th), you can continue to ring in the month at Eva Restaurant. And who better than Dave Danhi, the chef behind the truck, to make that happen and go course-for-course with Mark Gold? This is a great way to witness a reunion of sorts since Danhi and Gold know each other from the kitchen at Water Grill, where they were Executive and Sous chefs together, respectively.

Four-course Menu – $35

1) Dave’s Melt: sharp cheddar & gruyere with a parmesan crust on sourdough bread
Paired with Mark’s: heirloom tomato soup

2) Dave’s Melt: fontina cheese with caramelized onions and prosciutto crust on black peppercorn bread
Paired with Mark’s: braised artichoke and cioppolini onion tart

3) Dave’s Melt: ‘faux’ cheesesteak sandwich provolone, homemade pickles and crispy onions on french bread (Cheez Whiz on the side!)
Paired with Mark’s: prime beef, over charcoal

Dessert
Dave’s: vanilla mascarpone cheese and balsamic strawberries on sweet brioche
Paired with Mark’s: chocolate fondue

Five-course menu – $50

The butter poached lobster definitely has me excited. Also, wine pairings are available for an additional $20. Call the restaurant to make your reservation ASAP.

It’s here, again. The famous Grilled Cheese Invitational is back and bigger than ever – and ready to press. You may have heard in past years how crazily crowded the event has been, and with good reason – Is there a more loved sandwich out there? Thankfully, Tim Walker, who started the event back in 2003, and his team have spent time revamping and redesigning the invitational: You can get your tickets in advance! There will be separate categories for amateur and professional competitors! You can register pre-event to be a judge! Even…a costume contest?

And if you want to register to compete, you can still do that – so long as they haven’t reached their cap of 300 already. The categories of competition are Missionary (bread, butter, cheese), Kama Sutra (freestyle) or Honey Pot (freestyle, dessert). Also be sure to check out the rules of the competition. If you want to help out, they are also asking for volunteers. This year, the invitational is sponsored by Tillamook Cheese, who will be culminating their Love Loaf tour at the event by giving out samples of their cheese.
