Friday is National Drink Wine Day

National Drink Wine day

It seems like there’s an official day for absolutely everything, but tomorrow is probably the day commandeering an act that should be performed every day: Drinking wine.

If you feel like going out, there’s a couple places around town that will make it easy to celebrate:

Corkbar (Downtown)

This downtown, California-centric wine bar will be offering a flight of 3 wines for only $10. If you unlock the Foursquare Swarm Badge by checking in with 49 other wine-drinking, social media hangers-on, you’ll also unlock the incentive to receive extended happy hour specials—that is, $2 off drafts, $8 select wine, and half-priced select appetizers— for the remainder of the night. (To note: Normally, happy hour runs from 5 – 7 PM.) Delicioso!

Napa Valley Grille (Westwood)

Feeling confident about your wine palate? Wine Director Christina Sherwood will be leading a “Guess the Grape” game for guests, who will get to guess the varietal of a wine not currently on Napa Valley Grille’s wine list. Should you guess correctly, you’ll win a complimentary glass of wine. Fun!

Obika Mozzarella Bar (Century City)

Stop by for “Aperitivo Hour” between 4:30 – 7 PM for some tasty, mozzarella-focused bites and half-off wine. Again: Delicioso!

Feel like celebrating with a loved one or with friends (ok – maybe yourself) at home? Visit one of my favorite shops, including Domaine LA, Wally’s Wine, Silverlake Wine or K&L for some great vino selections. Their staff are always knowledgable and can recommend a great bottle or two across all different price ranges for your enjoyment.

Another good idea is to stop by the excellent Bar Covell wine bar in Los Feliz for a glass or three. It’s got just my kind of ambiance – casual, cool and not uppity. Feeling like accompanying your wine with some great cheese? Head on over to Cube on La Brea. Be sure to make a reservation if you plan on visiting during the evening because even the bar seating is reserved – and trust me, it will be packed. If you’re on the Westside, stop by Pourtal for their normal happy hour (4 – 7 PM: $5 wine and apps) and pours from their enomatic machines.

Whatever the case and however you choose to celebrate, Happy National Drink Wine Day!

Donkey and Goat Tasting Tonight at Pourtal Wine Bar

Red Wine and Spinach Spanakopita

I had the opportunity to visit Pourtal recently for one of their tasting events. It was a really fun experience and there’s always opportunity to learn just a bit more about wine while enjoying the pairings with bite-sized food. Fortunately, they always have educational & libational events coming up – including tonight, which particularly piqued my interest. Why?

For today’s installment of Pourtal’s participation in “Natural Wine Week LA” (going on through Sunday), they’re hosting Jared Brandt from 7 – 9 PM, who hails from the the wife & husband-owned Donkey and Goat winery. Operating out of Berkeley, Tracey and Jared Brandt are the “…donkey and goat behind these naturally made wines that are distinctive, soulful and truly represent the earth from which they come.” I first tried their 2009 “Isabel’s Cuvee” Granche Rose at Allston Yacht Club with H.C. and can honestly say this is probably one of the only roses I would heartily recommend given my limited rose knowledge. The whole tasting of 5 Donkey and Goat wines is only $15. Arrive at Pourtal a little early for their 4 – 7 PM Happy Hour to take advantage of their $5 glasses of wine and $4 delicious eats (try their tater tots) and you’re set.

In the meantime, have a great weekend, everyone. Don’t forget that Cinespia in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery kicks the summer off tomorrow with a screening of Wizard of Oz ($10 donation). Also, the all-new Nice Cream Vegan Ice Cream parlor opens on the Cahuenga Pass in Studio City.

New Year, New Decade: The NYE Dinner-Party Round Up

Photo credit to Stephanie Hillberry on Flickr

It’s not even Christmas Eve but if New Year’s plans give you a fraction of the headache it gives me, you could use this list. Whether you’re simply looking for some celebration bubbly with the guys or gals or for a full-on (or not so full-on) dinner, I’ve got plenty of options all over L.A. for you. There’s a little something for everyone, no matter your association.

Little Cave (Highland Park)

Did someone say free on New Year’s?! Because free will happen at Little Cave on the Eastside. Not only is there no cover charge, but drink specials will flow all night and free tacos will be given out from 9 PM through the countdown to 1 AM. Amazing! And that’s not even the last thing that’s free – you’ll get a glass of bubbly so you can toast fellow hipsters in between your swigs of PBR. Party favors will keep things festive.

9 PM – 1 AM

Free admission, free tacos, drink specials

Royal/T Cafe (Culver City)

The cosplay cafe in Culver City (say that 5 times fast) that has played host to LudoBites the past couple weeks and a Hello Kitty exhibition before that is hosting their own party to usher 2010 in – in the theme of “10,” of course. The $10 cover includes a midnight champagne toast, and all 2-for-1 drinks are $10. So grab a partner for those twofers and get on the dance floor because there will be a DJ spinning all night. Bonus: RSVP with 9 other crazies (for yes, a total of 10) and your partay gets a free bottle of champagne! Oh, groupies.

10 PM – 2 AM

$10 cover includes Champagne toast
$10 2-for-1 drinks

RSVP: RSVP [at] royal-t [dot] org with password “10”

Pourtal Wine Tasting Bar (Santa Monica)

In honor of the new year and new decade, Pourtal is offering “Bottomless Bubbly for $20.10.” For just a Jackson, your glass will never run empty. Your cup, instead, shall runneth over with Marquis de Perlade Blanc de Blanc, Pierre Sparr Rose and Kir Royale. Or just one, if you prefer. What a steal. No RSVPs for this one, though, so get there early and max out the bottomless. A little more lipstick on your champagne flute never hurt anyone!

9 PM – 12 AM

8 oz. Burger Bar (Melrose)

The controversial burger bar on Melrose will be closed to the public and open for the purposes of their private New Year’s Eve party – offering passed hors d’oeuvres, a dessert buffet and Champagne toast at midnight, along with a DJ to keep the tunes flowing all night. Not bad for $35 in advance, though set aside some more dough for the drinks. Hopefully the finger bites will prove plentiful.

Call to make a reservation, as 8 Oz. will be closed to public
