We’ve had quite a heat wave lately, but as it cools off (as much as it does here in Los Angeles, anyway), you’re probably going to want to spend one of these lazy days enjoying the view. Sure, there’s not as much urgency to the end of summer because we’re in lovely, if sometimes scorching, Southern California, but there are some great specials around town that are incentive to enjoy the weekend or evening panorama. Discover a new scene with opportunities like Sunday suppers, pop-up vendors and wine happy hours.
Back in the Fall, I made a little getaway to a familiar area (no, I won’t use that word that begins with “stay” and ends with “-tion”). It was a welcome chance to really explore what I already thought I knew, and the Hotel Wilshire was the perfect home base.
The Hotel Wilshire is walking distance to LACMA, but also to Petersen Automotive Museum. Both museums are the venues of so many cultural events, which makes the hotel seem like a great place for out-of-town visitors to establish their base or for locals to crash after a nearby gala. The rotating exhibits make it perfect for locals to visit time and time again.
Who doesn’t love a good rooftop in the summer? Fortunately, there are a few hotels around Los Angeles that are holding special events designed especially for the high peaks from which we can enjoy our Southern California sun … or sundown. At night, the city lights make for a beautiful view. Why not watch a movie against the outdoor backdrop, high in the sky?
The ION at JW Marriott at L.A. LIVE is hosting Blues & BBQ event every Sunday through September 2, 2012 from 12 – 4 PM at the outdoor poolside deck. Blues and soul musical guests like George Dez Blues Band and Gregg Wright “King of the Rockin’ Blues will be performing. For $18, you get one main entrée with side dish accompaniments
- BBQ Chicken brined in fresh herbs
- Grilled Skirt Steak with brown sugar spice rub
- boneless Baby Back Ribs with pineapple-bbq sauce wash
- slow-cooked baked beans, corn cobettes
If you’re more into Taco Tuesdays, they’re also offering $3 tacos, $3 tortilla chips and salsa with specially priced margaritas and Mexican beer from 5 – 8 PM.
Ever tried out the Peninsula Hotel’s rooftop cocktail hour? Well, tomorrow’s a good time as any to check it out, as from 5 – 7 PM they’ll not only be offering drinks at half-price like every week but also a buy-one-get-one-free deal for tickets to Taste of Beverly Hills. All-weekend passes will be discounted to $350 from $500. (You can take a look at the regular prices here.)
Choose one of their signature cocktails (regularly $16) – like the Kumquat & Citrus Punch (Ketel One, Malibu Rum, muddled kumquats, citrus juices), the Grape Cocktail (Hendricks Gin, Grapes, St. Germain Elderflower, lemon juices, club soda) or the Speckled Jalapeno Margarita (above). Or if beer or wine are more your speed, be glad because those are half-off, too. So before you go, take a peek at the schedule and list of attendees for each session so you know which one(s) you’d like to attend this Memorial Day Weekend (Thursday, September 2 – Sunday, September 5).
And as you’re basking in the sun or shade in the early evening on a rooftop in Beverly Hills, take comfort that your savings on Taste tickets will go towards your half-off happy hour libations. Don’t forget to enjoy your view! (And also don’t forget to bring your valet ticket to the rooftop to validate for discounted parking.)
